10 Affiliate Marketing Tips for Beginners
1. Pick a Topic You Know About or Have a Passion For
When you’re new to affiliate marketing, it can feel overwhelming trying to choose what you want to pursue. But the best advice I can give you here is to stick with what you already know.
For example, if you have a strong passion for cars, then pick the automobile industry. If you have a deep level of knowledge in working with computers, then pick computers. If you’re currently working as an accountant, the pick something to do with accounting, like accounting software.
Don’t make things hard for yourself in the beginning by choosing a topic you know nothing about. If you do, it can take you longer to have success in affiliate marketing because you’ll have to educate yourself along the way, and that takes time.
2. Focus On One Narrow Niche
Something I find a lot when I’m doing affiliate site audits for other marketers to help boost their income is that they’ve built a site that’s way too broad.
What I mean by this is that they want to cover a bunch of different categories as a way to make more money instead of focusing on one thing.
For example, instead of just reviewing lawn mowers, they also want to have sections on hedge trimmers, tractors, wood chippers, and every other piece of outdoor yard equipment you can buy.
But operating like this as a beginner in affiliate marketing often backfires on you because it makes your site less of an authority on one particular niche. It also takes longer to write content for all of those different categories.
So my best affiliate marketing tip for you here is to pick a small niche and capitalize on it.
For example, if you like cars, then pick one specific model of car that you can recommend products for, like a Ford Mustang. Then only review car parts that work on a Ford Mustang.
Or you can go in another direction and pick one particular aspect of cars that you want to center your affiliate content on, like mufflers, or hubcaps, or car stereos. And only create content that’s focused on that one thing.
To achieve quick success in affiliate marketing, you don’t want to spread yourself too thin or compete in a niche that’s already being dominated by big brands or burn yourself out from having to write so many different articles to cover multiple categories.
So the tighter you can narrow your focus down to one specific niche, the easier it will be for you to make money in affiliate marketing.

3. Establish Yourself as a Brand
Here’s another mistake that I see a lot of affiliate marketers make: they create an affiliate site based on an exact match domain or some other generic term like “The Best Muffler Reviews” or “TopCarStereoRatings.com”.
Now the reason some affiliate marketers do this is because they want to try to rank their site easier for a high-traffic keyword, but it often comes at the expense of having a site that appears to be low-budget.
And to most consumers, these types of sites also seem like they’re fake.
The fact is that real brands don’t do stuff like that.
A real brand creates a catchy name that’s memorable and can be used to set itself apart from other competitors online.
So instead of creating some fake-sounding name for your site, choose something that can establish it as a real brand.
For example, if your name was Rick and your affiliate site focused on car stereos, then you could brand yourself as something like “Rick’s Audio Dashboard”. Or if you wanted to make your brand sound like a bigger entity, you could choose something like “Coast to Coast Car Stereos”.
Those types of names sound much more authentic than “BestCarStereoReviews.com”, wouldn’t you agree?
4. Set Up a Hosted Website
Although it may be tempting, you should never use a free website service to host your affiliate site.
There are a couple of reasons for why this is a bad idea:
- Similar to my last affiliate marketing tip, a free website makes your brand look unprofessional. Instead of having a branded domain like “heaterpros.com”, it would be something like “heaterpros.wordpress.com” and it’s hard for people to take your website seriously when you don’t even have a proper domain name for your business.
- Another problem is that you’ll lose your site address when you migrate away from that free platform, and all of the work you did to rank that site will be lost. Plus, many of these free hosting services won’t allow you to set up a 301 redirect to your new site. So you basically have to start over from scratch.
- But most importantly, you can’t run advertisements or affiliate links on a free website service. Those actions go against the terms of service of the website hosting platform and the affiliate program, and if you try to do those things then you could get banned by both of them.
So make things easy on yourself by signing up for a real web hosting account.
These days it’s super cheap to have your own site. You can get your own branded domain name plus one year of hosting for around $50-75 per year from website hosting companies like Bluehost, Hostgator, and Siteground.
5. Join an Easy Affiliate Program Like Amazon Associates
As a beginner in affiliate marketing, you don’t need to worry about choosing the ultimate affiliate program that has the highest payouts.
That time will come.
Right now, your goal should just be to get your feet wet, learn how everything works, and set up a good affiliate site that’s generating money.
Once that foundation is set in place, then you can start shopping around for the best affiliate marketing programs.
A good program to start with is Amazon Associates. It’s easy to get accepted, it’s a trusted source for products, and it has a fantastic conversion rate.
6. Pick Products That Already Have Good Reviews
Here’s another mistake that I see a lot with beginners in affiliate marketing.
What they try to do is find these obscure products that no one else knows about, but are much better than the popular brands that people are already using.
And while that may seem like a good idea at first, the truth is that this strategy will kill your conversion rates.
That’s because people don’t trust products they don’t know. And they don’t trust products that don’t have a large number of reviews. Just like you, right?
So don’t try to convince people to buy something that the general public isn’t already purchasing. Instead, make it easy on yourself and pick the products that have the most reviews on Amazon.
It’s much easier to make a sale in affiliate marketing when you have the social proof from other happy consumers to back up your recommendations.
7. Focus on Writing Valuable Content
The more helpful your content is for people, the easier it is to make a sale.
When people are searching online for something, they need help. And if you provide the best help there is on a particular topic, then you’ll win their confidence and trust which can lead to more affiliate commissions.
As you’re writing your affiliate content, try to answer as much as you can about the topic. Don’t let your visitors feel like they have to go to other sites to fill in the gaps.
Give them everything they need to make a comfortable purchase.
Also, use words that sell. Don’t just do factual “content writing” but do persuasive “copywriting” that makes people want to buy the things you recommend.

8. Copy What’s Already Working
Here’s a simple tip for affiliate marketing success that’s right under your nose and you probably didn’t even know it.
Go to Google and search for a keyword that you’re trying to target. For example, “best headphones for working out”.
The first page of Google will tell you exactly what type of content it wants to see for that term.
In this case, it’s a top 10 list with a helpful buyer’s guide.
For other keywords, it may be an individual review, or an informational post, or a list of facts and data.
Every keyword is different.
But, the same thing is true for all of them: Google favors one type of content for that term.
So copy what’s already working.
Check out the content and page structures for the top 5 ranking sites for your target keyword. Then take notes on what each of them is doing.
You’ll definitely see a pattern.
Do those pages have comparison charts? Lots of visuals? An FAQ section? Extremely long forms of content? Or really short content?
Whatever you’re seeing, do the same things for your affiliate page.
This isn’t rocket science, and the answer for how to rank on page one of Google is right there in plain sight for you to see.
9. Choose a Page Structure and Stick to It
Do you want to know what all of my affiliate sites have in common?
They all have the same page structure.
No matter how many affiliate sites I build, rank, or sell, they all follow the same format.
Because sticking to one type of page structure for your various types of content: affiliate buying guides, individual reviews, and informational posts; will help you achieve faster success in affiliate marketing.
Templates make the writing process easier and they allow you to find out what is or is not working well on your site.
For example, if you stuck a comparison chart on every one of your affiliate buying guides, and you discovered that having a call-to-action button that said “Check Price” converted better than “Buy Now”, then you could easily deploy that change throughout your whole site as a way to maximize your earnings.
But if every one of those pages was structured differently, then you would have to analyze each one on a case-by-case basis and try to figure out what could make each page convert better.
And that will drive you crazy!
So pick a page structure for each of your various types of content and stick with it.

10. Have a Data-Driven Mindset
Realize that after you hit the publish button on a post that affiliate marketing then turns into a numbers game.
You have to track your results and make changes in order to improve your website traffic and earnings.
Don’t just walk away from a new web page and hope that it works out well for you.
Instead, find out what needs to be improved to make you more money and fix it as the traffic rolls in.
For example, I’ve had some pages that were stuck at #20 to #30 in Google for their target keywords and all it took was a slight adjustment to the keyword density for them to jump onto page one.
Additionally, I’ve had affiliate pages that ranked #1 for their target keyword and made $0. And it wasn’t until I changed the copy on the page or the call-to-action button that they started to make money.
So always track your progress on every page you publish. That way can make adjustments to gain more traffic and earn more affiliate income.
It’s better to have only a handful of highly visited and highly converting pages on your affiliate site than to have hundreds of pages that don’t get visited or make you any money.
Bonus Tip #11
I know I said that I’d give you just 10 tips for affiliate marketing success, but I wanted to throw in this last bonus tip here because I think it’s very important for all affiliate marketers to know, especially the beginners.
And that is to BE PATIENT and DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL!
You can’t expect huge wins to happen overnight.
Building a good affiliate marketing site takes time as well as trial and error to find out what works best for your niche.
Some of the things you try will fail. But others will work like a charm.
And that’s 100% normal.
In fact, I fail all the time, but that’s the only way I learn what DOES work.
And over the last decade, those failures have helped me develop a rock-solid strategy that consists of the most successful methods for building affiliate sites that are guaranteed to make a lot of money.
